A MESSAGE FROM THE STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION:
Dear Students,
January 10, 2012, the Board of Regents approved University System of Georgia Chancellor Hank Huckaby’s recommendation to consolidate eight of the System’s 35 colleges and universities.  Included in the consolidation recommendation are Middle Georgia College (Cochran) and Macon State College.  Chancellor Huckaby said, “We will focus on how these consolidations enable us to better serve our students and areas of the state more efficiently and effectively.”  For more information see the University System of Georgia website, http://www.usg.edu/news/release/regents_approve_campus_consolidation_plan.

In order to facilitate a successful transition, your Student Government Association (SGA) is seeking student input in this important process.  The SGA will share the information collected with the administration and will continue to provide an open forum of communication in the best interest of all students affected by the Macon State College and Middle Georgia College consolidation.  Please take a moment to share your questions, concerns, comments by completing the SGA Feedback Form, https://www.maconstate.edu/studentaffairs/apps/consolidation/default.aspx

Thank you,
Summer Leverett, SGA President, summer.leverett@maconstate.edu

SOUTHERN EDUCATION FOUNDATION SUMMER WORK EXPERIENCE
Request additional information and application details by sending an email to barbara.warren@maconstate.edu.
The Southern Education Foundation (SEF), www.southerneducation.org is the South’s oldest education philanthropy, tracing its origins back to 1867. Its mission is to advance equity and excellence in education for low income students and communities in the South, the region that is home to the nation’s poorest people. The South has the lowest levels of education attainment and achievement, the highest dropout rates, and provides the least need-based financial aid for higher education. It has the greatest need for new leaders to develop community partnerships and corrective public policies that will improve education equity, quality, and opportunity at all levels. Recognizing the need for new outstanding leaders in education and the nonprofit sector, SEF initiated in 2004 the Southern Education Leadership Initiative. The Initiative provides highly motivated and diverse upperclassmen and graduate students opportunities to develop as leaders, engage in their communities, acquire practical job skills, and learn about contemporary education issues. Students spend the summer in trainings and working at a leading nonprofit sector organization. During this experiential learning opportunity, they examine strategies for improving education, addressing community needs, and putting theory into practice. Over the last eight summers, SEF has placed over 135 students in nearly 70 nonprofits and foundations throughout the region focused on providing advocacy, grant-making, policy analysis, research, community organizing, and direct service in education. Students are given summer placements that pair well with their experience, educational interests, career paths, and developmental needs. Students may be asked to relocate for the summer.
Eligibility Requirements
· Completion of 60 credit hours (equivalent of junior status & above in undergraduate program) or enrollment in a graduate program or law program at a college or university.
· Familiarity with or demonstrated interest in social justice and/or education policy and practice.
· Excellent interpersonal, writing, and critical thinking skills, with flexibility to respond well to diverse people, settings, and tasks.
· Submission of the complete application by due date. (No exceptions on late applications will be made).
Students must submit a completed application form and all required materials to the Southern Education Foundation postmarked no later than March 1, 2012. Applications will be accepted by mail or electronically at velkan@southerneducation.org. Incomplete applications or submissions postmarked beyond the deadline will not be accepted. Applications will be reviewed, and the most promising and deserving students for the internship opportunity will be selected based on campus involvement, community service, a written personal statement, short answer questions, academic achievement, and two letters of recommendation.
