Q: Does Macon State College have a residency requirement for students?

A:Effective Fall 2011, Macon State College’s Freshman Residency Requirement applies to any student under the age of 21 until he or she has earned 30 semester hours (sophomore status) or has lived on campus for two consecutive semesters (excluding summer semesters).


An exemption to the Freshman Residency Requirement is automatically granted to a student who resides with his or her parent or legal guardian at the student’s permanent residence within the following counties: Bibb, Crawford, Houston, Jones, Monroe, Peach, Twiggs, Bleckley, Dooly, Macon, and Pulaski. While a student may be exempt from the Freshman Residency Requirement, we encourage all students to consider living on campus as a way to make the most of the Macon State College experience.

Q: When is the application deadline?

A: The Office of Residence Life does not guarantee the availability of a room when the application is received. There is not an application deadline; however, preference will be given to those who submit their application and deposit prior to July 1st for fall semester and May 1st for summer semester. Once the apartments have been filled, you may be placed on a waiting list.

Q: When can I move in?

A: Generally check-in is held the Saturday before classes begin. If accepted into the Residence Life community, you will receive an acceptance letter once your application has been approved. We will mail out check-in information approximately the first week of July for fall semester or first week of December for spring semester.

Q: What do I need to do to connect my computer to the Internet from a campus residence hall?

A: Macon State College offers internet access to students living in our Residence Life Community. Configuration information will be provided at time of move-in.

Q: What can I bring for the room?

A: Necessities: Laundry bag/hamper, pillow, pillow cases, sheets (full), blankets, bed spread/comforter, mattress cover (full), wash cloths, towels, clothes hangers, toiletries, soap, multi-outlet extension cord with circuit breaker (other extension cords pose a danger), pots, pans, silverware, dishes, waste can, and shower curtain and hooks.

Floor Mop, Broom, Cleaning Products (you are expected to clean your own apartment, bedroom and bathroom.)

Computers: Internet jacks are located in rooms; however, students should supply their own network patch cable and network adapter if they want to connect their computer to the internet.

Telephones: Phone jacks are located in rooms; however, students should supply their own telephone instrument. It is the student's responsibility to have their phone service connected and provided by a phone service company of their choice. This is not provided by Macon State College.

Q: What can I NOT bring?

A: Drugs or drug paraphernalia, alcohol or alcohol paraphernalia, fire arms/weapons, large knives, fireworks, paint guns, extension cords without circuit breakers, halogen lamps, pets (can have fish in less than 10 gallon tank), toaster ovens, candles (If it glows - it goes), microwaves.

Please note: Avoid using nails in sheetrock or woodwork. Damage done by nails or other fixatives will result in per item deductions from your Deposit Payment.

Q: What furniture/amenities are supplied in the room?

A: Full size bed, desk, and chair are supplied for each resident. All rooms have built-in closets (approximately 65” wide). All rooms have cable, internet, and are wired for telephone service, which can be activated by the student.

Q: Where are the bathrooms/showers located?

A: Each resident has a private bathroom in their bedroom unit.

Q: Do I have to pack up my suite in between Fall and Spring semesters?

A: If residents plan to return for the upcoming semester wherein they have notified the Office of Residence Life, they are allowed to leave the contents of their room and may return to the room on the days designated to begin the next semester's stay.

Q: What are the visitation hours for residents?

A: A guest is considered to be any visitor, male or female, who is not an assigned resident of that particular apartment/suite. Two (2) escorted guests per resident student are allowed in the apartments, under the following guidelines:

  1. Guests (male and female) are only allowed during the following times:
    • Residence Hall Rooms: 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 a.m.
    • Residence Hall Amenities: 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 a.m.
  2. All guests, especially those of the opposite sex, must be signed in at the desk and/or with the RA on Duty before entering any apartment. A completed guest sign in form must be registered with the residence life staff prior to the guest entering the suite.
  3. Unescorted guests are not allowed in the apartments at any time (i.e., lobbies, resident's suites, snack areas, hallways, laundry areas, etc).
  4. During summer sessions, Macon State College students are not allowed in campers' rooms or buildings, and campers are not allowed in student rooms or buildings.
  5. Children (anyone under 18 years of age) may only visit between the hours of 8:00am-5:00pm. At no time and for no reason may children stay overnight in the Residence Life community. Babysitting in the apartments is also not permitted.
Q: Can I take the beds apart?

A: Beds may NOT be taken apart for any reason.

Q: Can I have candles and incense in my room?

A: Candles and incense are NOT permitted for safety reasons.

Q: How much are keys if you lose them?

A: Lost keys must be reported to the Office of Residence Life immediately and will be replaced by the College. Residents losing (lost/stolen) keys or failing to return keys at the appropriate time will be charged $100 per door. No refund or cancellation of charges.

Q: Do I have to have a meal plan?

A:All residents will be required to purchase a $300 per semester declining balance food service plan. However, residents have the option to purchase larger plans if they prefer. To purchase a larger declining balance plan or to make payments, please visit the Bursar's Office, located on the 2nd floor of the Student Life Building. Food service will be available in the Cafeteria, the Starbucks Cafè in the PSC, and the cafè in the Library on the Macon Campus.

Q: Can I have a friend stay overnight within the apartment?

A: Residents assume financial and behavioral responsibility for their guests. Guests may stay free of charge, but their stay is limited to two consecutive days and no more than four days in a month with the advance approval of the Director of Residence Life. This includes and is not limited to parents, siblings, children, spouses, friends and significant others. The consent of your apartment mate(s) is necessary for all overnight guests.

Q: Are freshmen allowed to bring cars?

A: Yes, any student can have a car on campus as long as they abide by Macon State Parking Regulations.

Q: Does the Residence Life community have a curfew?

A: There is a security time at 1:00AM. This is a time that students are not allowed to loiter.

Q: How many computers can you have in a room?

A: Each resident of the room is allowed to have a computer.

Q: How many phone lines are in a room?

A: Each room has one specific telephone number and phone jacks are located in the rooms / unit. Residents are responsible for purchasing telephone service through a local vendor.

Q: Is there a separate bill for cable and phone?

A: There is no extra charge for cable. Residents are able to purchase a private line (at personal cost) in their bedrooms through AT&T.

Q: How many people share an apartment?

A: Each apartment houses four students, each with his/her own private bedroom/bathroom suite.

Q: Do residents have access to washers and dryers? If so, what is the cost to wash and dry?

A: A washer and dryer is located in each apartment. Washers and dryers are for use by Macon State College resident students ONLY.

Q: Do all the apartments have a kitchen area?

A: All apartments include stove, kitchen sinks, microwaves, and refrigerators.

Q: Do all the apartments have air-conditioning? If so, is it self-controlled?

A: Apartments have air-conditioning and heat. All units are self controlled within the apartment.

Q: Are there any activities for the residents in the apartments?

A: Campus Activities, Recreation, Counseling, and Residence Life Offices plan numerous events for the student body. Residence Life plans both weekday and weekend activities for residents within the Residence Life community and surrounding areas.

Q: Are alcoholic beverages allowed in the apartments of Residence Life community?

A: Residents are NOT permitted to have alcohol or decorative bottles in the apartments or on campus at large.

Q: Are there any co-ed buildings?

A: Each Residence Life building is co-ed. Each apartment is limited to single gender occupancy.

Q: Where is the parking for apartments?

A: Residents may park in spaces reserved for residents/students only. Parking is available near individual apartment buildings.

Q: Who helps secure the campus?

A: Public Safety personnel patrol the campus 24 hours a day/7 days a week/365 days a year. Resident Coordinators and Resident Assistants are available in the evenings to assist residents as well. Residents are responsible for their keys and keeping their student identification on them at all times.

Q: Is tutoring available?

A: Absolutely! Visit the College's Academic Resource Center website for information on tutoring and other services available: http://www.maconstate.edu/arc/services.aspx.

Q: What can a resident do if they do not get along with their roommate(s)?

A:Initially, residents are encouraged to meet with their Resident Assistants and/or Resident Coordinators in hopes of resolving minor personal conflicts. In cases of major conflict, residents may request an apartment change at a cost of $100 per resident with approval through the Office of Residence Life.

Apartment changes may be made at a cost of $100 (per person) once the second week of classes begins, as approved by the Office of Residence Life. The steps below must be followed to complete an apartment change:

  1. All parties involved (agree in writing) in the room change must come to the Office of Residence Life.
  2. All students must have a current apartment/suite inventory form on file before changes are permitted. Students moving will be given their current Apartment/Suite Inventory Form as well as a key and paperwork to the new suite.
  3. Students moving will have a Resident Assistant (RA) check them out of their old suite, and into the new apartment with the appropriate paperwork.
  4. Students turn in completed forms (old/new) and old keys (building/suite/hallway) to the Office of Residence Life immediately after the move is complete.

Q: How can I get in touch with a student due to an emergency?

A: Public Safety is available 24 hours a day: Residence Life Staff are available from 8 am - 5 pm (Monday through Friday).

Q: Where can a student go if they get sick or hurt?

A: Students may visit the Health Clinic, located in the Recreation & Wellness Center for medical assistance. Visit web page at http://www.maconstate.edu/studentaffairs/healthclinic/. In case of emergency, dial “911”.

Q: Does Macon State College offer its students health insurance? Is it mandatory?

A:The University System of Georgia has partnered with insurance company Pearce & Pearce to offer health insurance to all USG students. There are two types of plans - mandatory and voluntary. Most health services students and all international students fall under the mandatory plan and must be insured. Voluntary plans may be obtained by any Macon State College student and may include coverage for dependents.

Q: Who is in charge of the building if a student needs assistance with a concern or problem?

A: Residents are able to contact a Resident Coordinator who lives in the building for supervision purposes during evening hours. Resident Assistants are also available for assistance. The Office of Residence Life located in The Clubhouse Monday through Friday (8:00 am- 5:00 pm).

Q: Is there a banking service on campus? Where can a student open an account?

A: An ATM machine is located on campus in the Student Life Center Lobby. Students can visit the bank of their choice in town.

Q: What are the dimensions of the room so that I know how much to bring?

A: The bedroom floor dimensions are approximately 140” w X 130”w. The closet dimensions are approximately 65” w. The window dimensions vary depending on the type of room. These dimensions are listed below:

Q: Are there smoking and non-smoking rooms?

A: All rooms and buildings are NON-SMOKING. However, there are designated smoking spots throughout the campus and away from the apartments.

Q: Can I have pets?

A: Due to health, safety, and sanitary concerns, no pets are allowed in the apartments. Small aquariums (10 gallons or less) with fish only, may be kept in an apartment, provided it is free of leaks and all roommates agree.

Q: Why can students with only one Learning Support class now live on campus?

A: Now that Macon State College has a robust FYE program in place; students with one Learning Support requirement will participate in this program in collaboration with their choice to live in the residence life apartments. The addition of the FYE program to our campus has allowed those students with one Learning Support requirement who choose to live on campus to receive academic support and guidance to assist them in being academically successful.
