Warren C. Johnson Jr., a Macon State information technology major, is the recipient of the first Harold F. “Hal” Tipton Memorial Scholarship, awarded by the (ISC)² Foundation.
The Harold F. Tipton Memorial Scholarship, named after the late information security industry pioneer and (ISC)² co-founder, was established through the support of (ISC)² members and CRC Press, member of the Taylor & Francis Group, to provide passionate, aspiring information security professionals with a pathway into the information security profession.
The (ISC)² Foundation Scholarship Committee selected Johnson for his passion for information security, his dedication to expanding his knowledge at all costs, and his exemplary academic record. Johnson earned his associate’s degrees in computer science and aircraft systems maintenance technology while serving in the U.S. military. He is currently pursuing a bachelor of science in information technology with a focus on information assurance and network administration.
“Considering Mr. Tipton’s legacy, it is an incredible honor and a humbling experience to receive this scholarship,” explained Johnson. “Mr. Tipton not only helped (ISC)² develop a professional standard we can all follow, but he also laid the groundwork that will encourage generations of professionals to exceed it. His work has inspired me to do whatever it takes to demonstrate that I am a professional and to hold myself to a higher standard. I am truly humbled to receive this honor and will do everything I can to uphold all that it represents.”
During his more than 25 years of active duty service with the U.S. Air Force, Johnson dedicated himself to protecting the integrity of information on the military network. Although Johnson worked on a number of information security projects and disaster recovery programs during his tenure, he identifies his most notable accomplishment as serving as the communications and logistics advisor to the Iraqi Ministry of Defense. There, he helped rebuild the Iraqi Armed Forces, reconstructing computer and radio networks.
