Students from Mount de Sales Academy in Macon and students from Rockdale County High School in Conyers and captured first-place honors at the 2012 Math Olympics at Macon State College. Teams from 18 public and private high schools competed in the all-day event on March 23.
The winning teams in the public school division were:
•First place, Varsity – Rockdale County High School, Team 1: Cameron Easley, Heeyoon Kim, Jason Mitchell and Anika Reza. Their coach is Chuck Garner.
•Second place, Varsity – Lee County High School, Team 1: Charlie Van Brackle, Jay Howell, Yuhan Qin and Alan Un. Their coach is Cristy Busby.
•Third place, Varsity – First Presbyterian Day School* (Macon), Team 2: William Roddenberry, Joshua Shealy, Baylee Heard and Rachel Ham. Their coach is Barry Shealy.
•First place, Junior Varsity – Rockdale County High School: Ray Garner, Kierston Jackson, Jeremy Rachels and Michelle Zhang. Their coach is Chuck Garner.
•Second place, Junior Varsity — First Presbyterian Day School: Faith Marie Engle, Carter Floyd, Ruyi Marone and Barret Ham. Their coach is Barry Shealy.
•Third place, Junior Varsity –.Hawkinsville High School: Courtney Morrison, Anna Nguyen, Morgan Peavy and Kane Rollison, Their coach is Maisie Pilkinton.
The winning teams in the private school division were:
•First place, Varsity – Mount de Sales Academy, Team 1: Graham Bailey, Seth Hirsh, Nina Lee and Brandon Read. Their coach is Jeff Dobias.
•Second place, Varsity – Tattnall Square Academy (Macon), Team 2: Taylor Holloway, William Jackson, Taylor Morgan and Seth Thompson. Their coach is Carolyn Smothers.
•Third place, Varsity – Stratford Academy (Macon): Rohin Aggarwal, Sarah Dennis, Shruti Gupta and Lade Sogade. Their coach is Bobby Stecher.
•First place, Junior Varsity – Tattnall Square Academy, Team 1: Jack Haughawout, Abby Hinson, Loftin Whiddon and Rebecca Winget. Their coach is Carolyn Smothers.
•Second place, Junior Varsity – Tattnall Square Academy, Team 2: Abigail Deese, Audrey Green, Taylor Stevenson and Stone Waddell.
•Third place, Junior Varsity – Stratford Academy, Team 1: Alex Christianson, Hamilton Hirsh, Dori Kacsoh and Rehan Asfar. Their coach is Bobby Stecher.
Individual awards for the highest scores at the varsity level also were presented.
Winners in the public school division were Heeyoon Kim, Rockdale County High School, first place; Jason Mitchell, Rockdale County High School, second place; James Watwood, First Presbyterian Day School, third place; and Zachary York, Rockdale County High School, fourth place.
Winners in the private school division were Taylor Holloway, Tattnall Square Academy, first place; Brandon Read, Mount de Sales Academy, second place; Seth Hirsh, Mount de Sales Academy, third place; and William Jackson, Tattnall Square Academy, fourth place.
The Macon State College Foundation awarded $150 to $700 scholarships to the individual winners. The competition, coordinated by Macon State College math faculty, included individual exams and team matches, which were divided into public and private school divisions. The competition also was divided into Junior Varsity-level (grades 9 and 10) and Varsity-level (grades 11 and 12). This marked the 32nd consecutive year for the Macon State-sponsored Math Olympics.
*First Presbyterian Day School, a private institution in Macon, recently moved from the Georgia Independent School System to the Georgia High School Association, which is comprised of both public and private schools. This move allows First Presbyterian Day School to compete against public schools in events, such as Macon State’s Math Olympics.
