For all regular employees of Macon State College, sick leave is accumulated a the rate of one working day (eight hours) per calendar month of service. Regular part-time employees working one-half time or more accumulate sick leave in an equivalent ration to their percentage of time worked. Sick leave for all classified employees is cumulative. There is not a maximum amount of sick leave that may be accrued. Terminating employees are not eligible for compensation for earned but unused sick leave at the time of termination.

Sick leave may be granted at the discretion of the institution and upon approval by the supervisor of an employee's absence for any of the following reasons:

  • Illness or injury when the employee is too ill to work.
  • Medical and dental treatment or consultation.
  • Quarantine due to a contagious illness in the employee's household.
  • Illness, injury or death of the employee's immediate family requiring the employee's presence. The immediately family is defined as: the employee's children, spouse, stepchildren, parents, in-laws, grandparents, grandchildren, foster parents or legal guardian.

If sick leave is claimed for a period in excess of five consecutive work days, a physician's statement may be required to permit further claims of sick leave rights by the employee-patient for the continuous period. A hiring official or supervisor may require an employee to provide a physician's statement for lesser periods of absence. In cases of extended illness, a physician's statement must be provided to Human Resources every month.

A terminating employee does not accumulate sick leave nor is entitled to receive sick pay after the termination date of his/her employment.

Any employee unable to return to work after exhausting all accumulated sick leave and accrued vacation may request sick leave without pay for a period not to exceed one year. Furthermore, such approved sick leave allows the employee the right to continue his/her group insurance benefits while on sick leave, and the institution will continue its share of the cost for such period. Should an employee be unable to return to work after being granted sick leave without pay for one year, the employee will be terminated. All other benefits that otherwise would accrue to the employee are prohibited.
