When will MSC migrate to Desire2Learn (D2L)?
MSC will start teaching classes in D2L in January 2013.
What is D2L?
D2L is a Learning Management System (LMS) that is created and owned by a company called Desire2Learn. It will serve the same purpose as Vista does now for our campus.
Why are we moving to D2L?
Blackboard (who owns Vista) is discontinuing the Vista product line. Since the software will no longer be available the University System of Georgia had to move to alternate product. For more details on how D2L came to be selected visit this website: http://www.usg.edu/learning_management_system/
As a faculty member, what does this migration mean to me?
Consider D2L as the new Vista, any coursework you are using for Vista will have to be done in D2L starting in January 2013.
As a student, what does this mean to me?
You will no longer log into MSC Vista for your coursework. You will have to log into the D2L system for your online class content.
When you say migrate to D2L, what does that mean?
The Vista system is being taken offline for instructional purposes in January 2013. All online instruction will be done inside D2L starting in January 2013. MSC Vista will be taken offline permanently in December 2013 so all of your work will need to be moved into D2L or saved onto a storage device.
I am teaching classes in Vista, will any of my coursework be moved to the D2L system?

Information Technology Services (ITS) is moving two years of data from the existing Vista system into the D2L system. The data being moved into D2L is course content, no student work or student information will be migrated into the D2L system from Vista.

Student accounts\will be added into the D2L system for Spring semester in January 2013.

How will coursework from Vista be moved into D2L?

Coursework is being moved en masse by Information Technology Services (ITS) in Athens. It will take up to 2-3 months for one entire semester's worth of data to be moved. Check this link for the dates when the data will be moved:

Will there be training for faculty on how to use D2L?

Yes. Check this page for more details:

Will I get any assistance getting my classes setup for D2L?
The Distance Learning team is planning on reserving a classroom during Fall semester for the purpose of helping faculty prepare their classes for January 2013. The intention is allow faculty to drop by the classroom and get assistance in getting their classes setup in D2L. Stay tuned for more details.
How do I stay current on the D2L migration?
Check this website as FAQs and details will change as more information is known and shared by the ITS migration management team. Contact your school's D2L migration task Force member(s).
What is the D2L Migration Task Force?
The task force is a group of faculty and staff who represents each Academic area of the school. The purpose of the team is to assist in driving the migration from Vista to D2L, act as a communication conduit about this transition and guide the college in the migration, training and support strategies to the new platform.
Will student information (grades, discussion posts, assessment scores) be moved to D2L?
No student coursework will be migrated into the D2L system. However students enrolled in classes at MSC will be issued user accounts in the system when it goes live in January 2013.
How do I back up my student data in Vista?

Where can I get step-by-step instructions on how to backup my students' coursework in Vista 8+?

All USG Vista 8 servers are backed up on a frequent, periodic basis, but these system backups are only used to restore the contents of an entire server, in the unlikely event of a catastrophic system failure. This means that if an instructor unintentionally “clicks the wrong button,” or deletes "the wrong student," the section cannot be restored to a previous state.

It is recommended that instructors maintain their own backups of student data from their Vista 8 sections. After EACH GRADED EVENT (especially Midterms & Finals), it is suggested that all USG Vista instructors create backups of tools containing student coursework & information (including the Gradebook, Discussions, Vista e-mail, and Assessments). This is a "best practice" which comes in handy, not just to safeguard against "accidents," but to accommodate grade-challenges, and Incompletes, too.

Step-by-step instructions may be found below...

PRESERVING STUDENT DATA & CONTENT FROM A SECTION

Preserving Content

LEARNING MODULE

One of the most powerful tools in GeorgiaVIEW Vista is the Learning Module. A learning module is a tool where you may organize a single instructional unit, and may contain web pages, PDFs, videos, assessments, direct links to discussion topics and chat rooms. Almost any file type that may be displayed on the web may be placed in a Learning Module. Besides the advantage of organizing an instructional unit as a Learning Module, you can also export the entire Learning Module to be used in another section or used to restore the content to its original form.

To Export a Learning Module as a Content Package
  1. From the Build tab, click on Learning Module link in the left side navigation menu.
  2. From the list of Learning Modules, select the Learning Module(s) you wish to export. NOTE: You may select multiple Learning Modules at the same time.
  3. Click the Export button at the bottom of the list of Learning Modules.
  4. Your File Manager will open. Navigate to where you wish to place your exported file. Click the OK button.
  5. Creation of the export file may take a while so be patient. Click the Return button once the process is complete.
  6. To download the Learning Module export file to your hard drive once it has been created, click on your File Manager link and navigate to the directory you saved the export file. Click on the Action Link menu icon and click the Download link. You will now have a file that contains your Learning Module(s) that you can import into any other GeorgiaVIEW Vista section.
To Import a Learning Module Content Package
  1. From the Build tab, Click on the Manage Course button in your Designer Tools area.

QUIZZES (ASSESSMENTS)

How long will MSC Vista be online?

MSC Vista will be decommissioned in December 2013. Faculty will no longer be able to teach in the system after Fall Semester 2012. On February 22, 2013 faculty and student access to the system will be disabled.

When is the last semester I can teach in MSC Vista?
Fall semester 2012 will the last semester that the system will be used for actual teaching. Information Technology Services (ITS) will not import any data into the Vista system after that.
When will I be able to access D2L to work on my courses?

MSC faculty can log into our D2L system now. User account information will be given to faculty after they attend the D2L Overview training session.

Student accounts will not be added into D2L until a few days before classes begin in January. Students will be notified via email about this information.
What can I do to prepare for the migration to D2L?
Start backing up your grade books in the Vista sections you have already taught, begin looking at the classes you are teaching and make sure you know where the content you are currently (or have been using) is stored at. Look over the D2L documentation on this site (D2L Quick Start Guides, D2L user Guides, D2L General Documentation and D2L Training Session Briefings and Handouts). Plan on setting some time aside before the go-live time to work on getting your classes prepared in the new system. And definitely try to attend some of the training sessions.
How do I get a question added to the D2L FAQ?
Email charles.smith@maconstate.edu. It would be helpful if you put D2L FAQ in the email subject line.
