Internship Employer Responsibilities

Career Services and Macon State College greatly appreciate your willingness to host an intern. Your efforts will enhance our students’ education by providing a bridge between their classroom experience and the world of work.

The following outlines your responsibilities as the internship employer:

  • Offer a true career-related experience that enhances academic learning. Hiring a student to perform busywork (data entry, filing, answering phones, etc.) is appropriate for internship experiences only when balanced with meaningful professional responsibilities.
  • Provide a position description that will describe the internship. This is an opportunity for you and the student to clearly define the job duties that will be performed during this time-limited employment period.
  • Set a schedule with the student intern that balances both the needs of the employer and the needs of the intern to successfully complete their academic workload.
  • Appoint someone to act as a mentor/supervisor during the experience. Provide an orientation for the student to the work site. Introduce the student to the organization, the employees, the physical layout, and the order of responsibility. Be sure the student intern knows the general philosophy and procedures of operation for the organization as a whole. Inform the intern of rules and expectations to be followed, including appropriate dress code.
  • Provide a safe workspace and environment for the intern.
  • Have student intern sign any non-disclosure or confidentiality agreements required of all employees. Understand that student interns are covered under the liability insurance of Macon State College "only" if they are enrolled in a required internship course for credit (not all students have this requirement or opportunity).
  • Provide the Intern with feedback and assessment information. Be sure that the mentor/supervisor has the time to oversee the student's performance and offer constructive feedback.
