English Studies Organization (ESO)

The ESO is a vibrant and active student organization dedicated to supporting members' appreciation of literature in an engaging, social environment. Open to all MSC students, this group hosts a range of events, including lectures, poetry readings, book discussions, and film screenings. In spring of 2009, the ESO hosted "The Culture of Conflict," an undergraduate conference open to all University System of Georgia, Mercer, and Wesleyan students. Past ESO activities include field trips to see the play Chicago at the Macon Grand Opera House and a production of Spamalot at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center in Atlanta. ESO members are also very service-oriented, and have worked at the annual Friends of the Macon-Bibb County Library book sale and served as volunteers at the annual High School Academic Bowl.

Pathways: Models for Composition

Pathways

Now in its seventh edition, Pathways: Models for Composition is a Pearson-published collection of freshman student essays composed originally for MSC English 1101 and 1102 classes. Pathways provides student writers an outlet for legitimate publication and serves to "make students and instructors attentive to the problems of writing for real audiences. When students know that only instructors will read their writing and that the only consequence will be a grade, whether high or low, their essays will likely lack the authentic tone of those who really want to communicate with an audience. By discussing the selections in Pathways, however, students will discover that freshman writing generally, and quite possibly their own writing in particular, need not be a mere academic exercise" (v).

Serving on the Editorial Board for the Seventh Edition were Dr. Debra H. Matthews, Dr. Amy Berke, Dr. Patrick Brennan, and Dr. Sharon Colley.
